My attempt to go to bed at a "reasonable" hour has failed. :( I lay down, but felt awake and anxious. So now I am sitting here, not cleaning to prepare for my mom's visit, and stressing about the thing I forgot to do at work.

Earlier in the evening, I watched that new show Journeyman. I think I liked it better when it was called Quantum Leap, but on the other hand, I do like it when shows are set in San Francisco and look like they may even be filmed there at least part of the time. [ profile] invisiblebf's comment was: "Here's the thing — this series started off by jumping the shark."

As always, SomeEcards says it best:

So basically, my greatest accomplishment of the evening was that I finally was able to catch the bees on Animal Crossing after like 3 years of trying. I win!

Kwik E Mart

So, for those of you who are Simpsons fans & eagerly awaiting the new Simpsons movie, you probably know that there's a promotion going on where twelve 7-Eleven stores around the country have been turned into "Kwik E Marts."

The U.S. locations where a 7-Eleven store was transformed into a Kwik-E-Mart are New York City; Chicago; Dallas; Denver; Burbank, Calif.; Los Angeles; Henderson, Nev.; Orlando, Fla.; Mountain View, Calif.; Seattle; and Bladensburg, Md.

The Los Angeles location? It's two blocks from my house!!! :) On Tuesday night, there were like 500 people in line to get in!!! Photos TK! :)

I have been very busy since CousinOfKittens (CoK) came to live with me last Wednesday and I've also been sick with some kind of icky cold this whole time. However, it's been sort of sobering to realize just how little I had been doing with my evenings prior to her arrival. So after a week of whirlwind activity, tonight I am sitting here watching Pirate Master (the pirate-themed reality show that I should have been cast on, damnit! I love how they keep blurring out this one girl's chest — I think her nipples must be falling out of her bra!) so I figured I'd multi-task and do a nice big update that no one will read! :)

We went to a Rhett Miller concert )

Captain & Kitten pwn Disney )

I got derailed from updating because someone I hadn't talked to for a long time unexpectedly called me... so now I'm just going to wrap it up for now.
ETA: Except that I wanted to add that the brunch mimosas apparently had some sort of appetite suppressant in them because neither Dave nor I felt hungry the entire day and went the whole time at Disneyland without buying a corndog or even a pretzel.

After a truly shitty work week, it's nice to cling to the illusion of the weekend.

I spent much of yesterday out at Glen Ivy Hot Springs Spa, where you get to wallow in the mud and get painted with kelp and boil yourself in a Roman bath. It was fun, but I am incredibly tired today. Who knew that sitting in a mineral hot springs and a steam room could be that exhausting? :) If only the steam room had had birch twigs like a traditional Russian banya...

Speaking of Roman baths, I finally saw me some Rome on-demand. I wasn't expecting quite so much nudity... maybe the new acronym for HBO should be: "Heyyyy, boobies're on!" :) But, oh, how much do I love on-demand cable! It allows me to watch tv shows I would otherwise forget to see, like the new BBC-spawned Robin Hood, which is ok, though it may be already jumping the shark after only three episodes. I also watched the pilot episode of The Tudors, which apparently won't premiere til April. There is lots of sex, pretty costumes, and jousting. It kind of reminds me of my beloved Dorothy Dunnett books. :) Jonathan Rhys Meyers as young, studly Henry VIII? Hmmm. I will probably watch more episodes as they turn up in the on-demand menu. Now if only Weeds would start up again, my tv-plate would be full.

Speaking of full plates, soon it will be time for an all-you-can-drink mimosa brunch. Huzzah!

Only about 4 people on my list will care, but I had a celebrity sighting this weekend!!! I saw Tyler from this season of Amazing Race!!! He's the blond one.
He looked just like he does on the show.

I didn't say anything to him. :) His team is still in the race, so he's contractually obligated not to reveal anything. So, what could I say: "Gee, I hope you guys win!" or "TTOW!" :) Well, maybe I should have said something. But no one I was with at the time was familiar with the show and I didn't have the motivation to go up to him on my own. Darn it! :)

Next time...!

I don't like memes much, but [ profile] bluesilverkdg was so nice when she "tagged" me with this one, I thought I'd do it — giving everyone a breather from the ranting and whining which is the typical content of this LJ.

That is all for now. I'm not going to "tag" anyone. You want to do it, go ahead! :)

Lucky Day!

This morning, as I was getting dressed, I spontaneously decided to wear something a bit more formal and business-like. Previously, I had been planning to wear one of my numerous cargo pants/hoodie sets. Instead, for some reason I put on a long skirt and one of my really nice shirts. I merrily traipsed off to work, and then I was reminded about an off-site meeting today with Someone Very Important. Wooo! Gotta look presentable!

Then, all day, I whined to myself in my head about how I didn't want to go to my evening class (6-10 p.m.) and how I just wanted to go hooooooome. Presto! The professor was ill and class was canceled! I drove home, wondering at all of these lucky events. I thought to myself: "Hey, maybe I'll get a parking spot right in front of my apartment building, rather than on the back street where the sex offenders live." Yes! Got the parking spot right in front of the house.

What else could go right? "Hmmm, I bet if I look hard enough, I'll find that cookbook I've been moaning about misplacing," I muttered, "Low-Fat Vegetarian Cooking. I've looked and looked and looked and... oh, there it is!" Yay, cookbook!

This is all obviously building up to something really big. Thus, Uchenna and Joyce had better win The Amazing Race tonight!!! :)

Pop! Pop-pop-pop-pop-pop-pop!!!

Ahem. Where was I? Oh, right. It's Friday! Woo hoo, Friday! Friday used to mean something when I didn't have to work on weekends! But that's ok. The rewards are soooooo worth it... wait, there are none! Hahaha, tricked you!

I must say that I am loving the latest season of The Amazing Race thus far. I'm going to be playing a drinking game of my own invention this whole season. So far, it's like this:
  • Every time someone mentions Rob & Amber having been on Survivor, drink.
  • Every time Rob & Amber mention having been on Survivor, drink twice.
  • Every time the helicopter guy who was shot down and was a POW brings it up again, drink.
  • Every time the interchangeable blonde girl teams talk about being blonde, drink.

Can it really be that five years have gone by? I worked quite a bit as an extra on the first season of Angel -- if you squint hard enough, you can probably see me, running around Wolfram & Hart as a lawyer or a secretary or on the street or in a club scene, in some episodes that season. I worked a little on the second season, too -- by then, I was stepping away from the whole extra thing, so I can't really remember much about it. The last time I ever worked as an extra, though, it was on Angel. I wore my fun fur skirt, for the first, and only time. That $9 purchase paid for itself.

Working as an extra cured me of my love for TV and movies. It cured my wide-eyed fascination with the "Biz." Most importantly, it cured my "fandom" and any hero-worship type emotion I ever held for any actor, ever. All of those feelings drained away as quickly as my financial security (I'm still reaping all the benefits of that high paying career choice). Do I regret going that route? No, I don't. Do I miss doing that work? God, no.

I do miss that initial sense of wonder I got from being on a set -- of seeing, in the flesh, actors that fans would squee over. It was fun to know spoilers for my favorite shows long before anyone else. Then again, I miss having "favorite shows." Angel was the last TV show that I still watched with any regularity. And now it's over.

Last night, I had dreams worthy of an acid trip. First, I dreamed an entire episode of SpongeBob SquarePants in which Patrick finds a real starfish (biologically correct) and freaks out. It was so much like a real SpongeBob episode that I have to wonder if my dream self hasn't somehow tuned into transmissions from Nickelodeon. Time to get out the tinhat!

Then, I dreamed that someone I haven't seen or spoken to in a really long time (and am no longer friends with) called me on the phone. I took the call, feeling unhappy and uncomfortable. Then they handed off the phone to their SO, someone else I used to be friends with and wouldn't want to talk to anymore. Afterwards, in the dream, I felt very unhappy for letting politeness get in the way of my real feelings, wondering why I didn't just say: "Look, I really don't want to talk to you" to those people.

The dream went on and on, after that. This is what happens when you take 5-HTP. You get these totally psycho dreams. I was so out of it this morning -- I couldn't really seem to wake up. I've spent the entire day in this half-awake, out-of-it state -- going through the motions. I've gotten nothing done on my list of 10,000 things I have to do.

Ponch and Jon are on TV! I've never seen this show before. It frightens me with its California Highway Patrol goodness. Why are these people the heroes of the show? They're the ones who give out tickets. Is this irony? And people are dancing disco... on roller skates.

All kinds of odd thoughts are going through my head.
  • I am no longer in constant pain from my various violations of the other day, except my arm just looks kind of disgusting. I will wear the scars proudly, however. By tomorrow, I think all the lingering pain will go away.
  • I'm thinking about making another poll.
  • The next time I go out of town to an undisclosed location, I think I'll be more upfront about it, so when the huge inevitable online disaster strikes, people will have less of a hassle trying to reach me. On the other hand, I don't really always feel like sharing my RL movements with the denizens of netland. Gotta strike that balance, I guess!

Now it's like 3 hours later, but I'm too lazy to do anything about the outdated information.

I've officially listened to the ROTK soundtrack too much. It's now playing constantly in my head even if I'm not actually listening to it. In fact, I hear it even now. The bells! The bells! I actually really thought it was on just now -- but it isn't. Just in my head!

The week has whipped past. On Wednesday, I discovered that I really just can't watch Angel anymore. I saw Christian Kane was guest starring and said, "Hey! It's... that guy... Lilah's... rival!" I couldn't remember the character's name nor really anything beyond the Evil Hand. In fact, I had a better recollection of my actual conversation with CK that I had while riding back to our cars (for those just tuning in: I used to work as a professional "background actor" aka "extra" in film and television) than of anything that he did on the show. Well, I remember now, but... Eh.

    Not much else to say.

Before she left, my roommate baked me an apple pie. She also gave me 3 SpongeBob DVDs. I do not deserve this woman!

Really, what I ought to be doing is watching the DVDs -- hey, it's research! But that would involve getting out into the living room and that seems like too much work.

I am very lethargic, possibly because it's raining; possibly because I've eaten nothing but apple pie since Friday. Apple pie -- not just for dessert anymore. Apple pie for lunch, dinner, and breakfast. Apple pie!

Watching Angel for the first time this season. I wish I could get excited about this show. Or any show. It's kind of sad they've resorted to gruesome bloody splattering to create any kind of tension.

Yeah, yeah, Halloween episode. Whatever. Spooky.

I've had this realization (I can't bring myself to call it an epiphany) brewing and percolating and bubbling in my head. I was thinking about it all afternoon, oddly enough, and then it sort of crystallized right before I sat down to watch my WB shows.

Right before Smallville, I got a call from a friend who was trying to get someone to tape it and Angel for her. I've been that person, so many times. My friend said, "I was trying to think of who might be taping, and I thought you might." And the fact is, a few years ago, it would have been me.

As I fumbled around for a tape and tried to wrestle with my mom's VCR, the realization that gelled into reality is that I really just don't care about any kind of TV anymore. I can't really seem to "follow" shows. The bloom's even off the lily for Queer Eye for me -- it's been boring me so I've quit watching.

In a way, I sort of miss that enthusiasm I used to have for pop culture.
