Your Sprat on a Diet

I thought I would post a little update about Sprat! When I rescued Sprat on May 1, he weighed a whopping and rather unfortunate 23 lbs. Sprat's current weight is...

...16 lbs, 7 oz! He has lost almost 30% of his total body weight.
This is what Sprat looked like when I rescued him. This is what he looked like at the end of December. He's lost a little more since then.

Sprat is really a great cat. We continue our clandestine affair: no sooner do I sit down on the couch, he immediately joins me. Things with him and Chip seem to be getting a little better. The other day, I walked in on them cuddling together on the bed! They immediately sprang apart in guilt and shame, but I saw what they did there! It was so cute. So cute!

ETA: Everyone asks how I got him to lose the weight, which I should have written about in the post... duh! So basically, I knew from Sprat's case file that he had previously been free-fed dry food (hairball control). In other words, he was a dry food addict/junkie. Chip only gets wet food, so I put Sprat on the same plan: 2 cans (7 oz total) of wheat-free wet food a day, split into 4 portions. For Sprat, I alternate Fancy Feast (surprisingly not bad as long as it's wheat-free) and raw food from a local store (unfortunately, raw food makes Chip barf every time). They both get freeze-dried chicken as treats. Essentially, this is the "Catkins" diet - low in carb, high in protein.

However, I actually do have to feed them in separate rooms. In the beginning, Sprat was a slow eater, because he wanted his dry food and kept hoping the wet food would go away. So Chip would finish his own food, then muscle Sprat out of the way and finish his. :) But now, it's the other way around: Sprat hoovers down his own portion, then runs to the kitchen in the hopes that Chip is still eating, so he can steal the noms! :)

They have more or less equalized now at 16.5 pounds, but Chip is much taller/rangier overall, so Sprat probably still has another 2 or 3 pounds to go before he's at his ideal BMI.

Aww, good job!! How did you get him to lose weight with another cat in the house? We have three cats and one of them is overweight because she eats ALL THE TIME. We do free feeding because if we don't the other (normal weight) cats get very angry when there's no food in the bowl for more than 5 seconds.

[identity profile] aceofkittens.livejournal.com 2011-01-26 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah! I should have put that in the post itself. You're like the 4th person to ask me! :) I will edit.

Short answer: No free feeding and portion control. And Sprat really loves to play, so I work him out a few times a day with the laser pointer!

I wonder how our other cats would respond to no free feeding. They tend to graze a little all day and night. A few kibbles here, a few kibbles there. If I put their portion for the day in front of them, they'll probably eat a few and then wander off, leaving the rest for Fatty McFatterson to eat. Hrm.

[identity profile] aceofkittens.livejournal.com 2011-01-26 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Edited! So, do you feed them dry?

[identity profile] mooflyfoof.livejournal.com 2011-01-26 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, cool! Thanks. Yep, we feed them dry. This stuff.

[identity profile] aceofkittens.livejournal.com 2011-01-27 06:37 am (UTC)(link)
Small portions multiple times a day is what my vet said I should do... so if there's a way to pull the foods away so that they're only getting fed at specific times, it will probably help the Fatty lose a little.

Of course, it is not all sunshine and roses — not free-feeding means that I get clawed awake every morning between 5:30 and 6 a.m. :D

ALARM CLAW

Aiee. Me too. Mine is mostly licking though which is cute, but persistent.

I am in an abusive relationship with the cat. :(

What a sexy beast!

[identity profile] aceofkittens.livejournal.com 2011-01-26 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
He is a sweet little bundle of looooooove!

[identity profile] trystbat.livejournal.com 2011-01-26 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow! That's amazing.

Both Melusine & Toulouse have always been fed at set times & w/set amounts, but Mel is a little porker & Tulls is scrawny (well, he seems to have a medical excuse).

My mom's cat, Crazy Filka, has always been free-fed dry and wet, and is tiny and slender. It's all in the genes! :D

[identity profile] sassycat8.livejournal.com 2011-01-26 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
He looks so great! His former basketball with legs self is almost gone. Does he still hold up the wall?

[identity profile] aceofkittens.livejournal.com 2011-01-26 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I just edited the entry... YES, he still holds up the wall and sits in the exact same way. :)

[identity profile] aceofkittens.livejournal.com 2011-01-26 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Waaaaaait, what is this? Sprattoro's twin?!!!

[identity profile] valree.livejournal.com 2011-01-26 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I know, right? Have you seen this? http://www.cedarseed.com/fire/catstut6.jpg
I could spend hours categorizing the cats we know! Mooncookie is a cap-and-saddle!

[identity profile] aceofkittens.livejournal.com 2011-01-26 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait, what is Chip?!!!!!!!

[identity profile] valree.livejournal.com 2011-01-26 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Chocolate with mask and mantle?? You tell me!

[identity profile] aceofkittens.livejournal.com 2011-01-26 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I always thought he was Tabby and white... he has the tabby hat and cow kitty pattern and tabby tail! :) Cap and saddle Tabby?

Wonderful! You are such a good cat mom.

[identity profile] aceofkittens.livejournal.com 2011-01-27 06:02 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you! I've been lucky to have some great cats!

Yay! I <3 Sprat!

I think The Noodle needs to lose about 3-5 lbs to be considered within his "normal" range for his body. Sadly, he's been stubborn as hell in losing anything and we do an alternating wet and small portions of dry in his diet. Nothing seems to make a difference, though. :-/

[identity profile] aceofkittens.livejournal.com 2011-01-27 06:13 am (UTC)(link)
How many oz of food is he getting a day? Is there "filler" (like wheat, corn, rice) in the dry?

Noodle is awesome, though!

[identity profile] segerquist.livejournal.com 2011-01-27 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
Yayyyyy! My boyfriend looks so cuuuuute! ;-)

[identity profile] aceofkittens.livejournal.com 2011-01-27 06:14 am (UTC)(link)
He wants to know when you are coming to visit! :)

[identity profile] splodgenoodles.livejournal.com 2011-01-27 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
Yay for you and Sprat!

We are rather lucky - both Pach (who died last year) and Tiger are free fed and fine!

[identity profile] aceofkittens.livejournal.com 2011-01-27 06:23 am (UTC)(link)
I'd like to see some pics of Tiger!

[identity profile] ladyeuthanasia.livejournal.com 2011-01-27 03:28 am (UTC)(link)

He reminds me of Cairo Egypt. Handsome boy! Good work, lady. :D

[identity profile] aceofkittens.livejournal.com 2011-01-27 06:24 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you! ♥

[identity profile] curlicue.livejournal.com 2011-01-27 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I know he's feeling better (feline better? heheee)

[identity profile] aceofkittens.livejournal.com 2011-01-31 07:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes! He always loved to play, but now he can jump higher and run faster! :)
