The moment is at hand

The perfect kitten, as everyone else knows, is just an illusion. And it doesn’t happen when you go looking for it. But the girl keeps on looking, hopeful. She always hopes that things will be different. This time, she’ll know. She’ll know that this is the moment; this is the next perfect kitten. (from my perfect kitten vignette)

Anyone who knows me, knows that I am a crazy cat lady in training. I have always had the family cats up in SF, but never took one of my own down in LA. There has always been an excuse — a reason not to do it. "I'm always going to SF." "I'm not home enough during the week." "The person I live with doesn't want pets." Always, always some sort of (reasonably valid) excuse. This hasn't abated my cat hunger, but I've learned to live with the lack. In addition to these reasons (and because of these reasons), I have gone on record to say that I would never go and purposefully get a cat. The only way I would get a cat is if I found one (again). I have always had this sort of weird animal-finding magnetism going on. I believe in fate. For months, now, I've been whining to people about how I hoped I would once again find a cat. I kept on looking, hopeful.

Sure enough, back in May, I found Snuggles the lop on the street. He was awesome and I pondered taking him back from the rabbit rescue when he's finally available for adoption. Unfortunately, the biggest sticking point is this: my apartment's lease does not actually allow pets. Past landlords turned a blind eye, and other people's cats have stayed there before. Even this latest, slum-landlord, allowed [livejournal.com profile] cheesehead1701 and her cat, Aja, to live with me unimpeded for 6 months. The downstairs neighbor has the eternally howling pitbull. The other neighbors downstairs have a bird and a little terrier. But the slum-landlord has grown steadily more hostile toward me and my next door neighbor, Judy. Our 2 units pay the least amount of rent and he wants us out. Last year, when Judy briefly fostered a little dog, he tried to evict her over it. So, just in case, I wrote the landlord a polite letter on July 1, asking for official permission to have pets. He ignored it.

On July 15, I found the next perfect kitten.

I had seen this cat earlier in the week, lurking in the bushes outside my office building. I figured it was another of the many feral cats on this campus. Friday, my coworker was standing in the same place, talking to someone, and the cat came out of the bushes and she picked it up. Dirty, starving, weak, it clung to her, purring. She took it back to her office and called me.

All I wrote before was true still: all the reasons not to. The landlord did not return my 8 messages. It could become a huge mess if he wants to be a jackass about it. But it's like that joke: A man prays to God every night, asking to win the lottery. One day, the heavens open up and God says, "Look, I really want to help you out here, but would you at least buy a lottery ticket?!" Yes, I believe in fate. But you have to be ready when the hand of providence reaches down and gives you that firm, butt-loving shove.

I was ready.

My new cat:

Well, I, for one, do believe in providence.

We just need a name, now.

[identity profile] aceofkittens.livejournal.com 2005-07-20 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
It is a fierce baby name battle. :) I currently like Konstantin (Kostya), but there is resistance...

And "Captain Jack Sparrow" doesn't seem like it fits either.

The ark opens, a voice booms out: Shmuel, Shmuel... First, you gotta buy a ticket!

I think your new cat is darling.

[identity profile] aceofkittens.livejournal.com 2005-07-20 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Hahah! I thought you might know that joke! :)

He's so skinny, it's terrifying. He is a walking cat skeleton wrapped in grungy fur.

Not for long, though. :)

P.S.

[identity profile] aceofkittens.livejournal.com 2005-07-20 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait — maybe I should name him "Father Jack Hackett!" Ahahahah! :)

omg...most perfect cat ever!!! I'm so happy for you!
sidenote: I told my landlady repeatedly that we were going to take Will in. we're supposed to pay a $300 deposit, but she never asked for it.
we're supposed to have kitty declawed, but I had her wear Softpaws instead. maybe your landlord is just giving you a break w/o actually stating so. just a thought.
enjoy your life with your new friend!!!

It's uncanny timing. Earlier that day, in response to one of your Willow posts, I was going to whine about how I can't have a cat and how I pine for a cat and how I wander around all the time looking for a cat — then this. I didn't say anything earlier, because I didn't want to jinx it. But that's why I asked how you found Willow.

I think when he fattens up and cleans up (he is so dirty! this picture is already after 1 spray down bath, and he's still dirty!), he will look a little like boyfriend! :)

Yay! Kitty! He looks like a PunkAssCat(tm). I love the sassy look on his face. Congrats on the new pal :-)

Thank you!!! I'm still waiting for the other shoe to drop & the eviction notice to land on my doorstep, but I'm trying really hard not to be too Eeyore about all this. :)

The vet did say that he probably would be a badass once he regained his strength. :) Right now, he weighs 8.5 pounds.

cute,..

and in good hands,..:)

That cat has won the kitty lottery. :)

[identity profile] 10443.livejournal.com 2005-07-20 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
He is adorable !

He looks full of attitude.

To me he looks like a Dirk, Gustav or Manny.

I'll have to present your suggestions to the Cat Naming Committee 2005 and see what they say. :) I'm so bad at naming things... all of my stuffed animals have names like "Yellow Bear," "Big Frog," etc. :)

When I die, I want to be reincarnated as one of Irina's cats=)

Ha! Hey, I'm already running around buying this cat industrial-sized jars of Pounce & pounds of organic ground meat. :)

[identity profile] chomp.livejournal.com 2005-07-20 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I recommend the following names:

Spoon
or
Scantron

[identity profile] aceofkittens.livejournal.com 2005-07-20 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks for the suggestions! Don't you think Spoon is a girl's name, though? Spoons are female, knives are male... or so it seems.

Of course, then I'd have an excuse to thunder out, "SPOOOOON!" even if I wasn't channelling the Tick...

Name the cat

[identity profile] nowafulldeck.livejournal.com 2005-07-20 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Other than say I won't mention it, I won't mention Eliot's poem. Sorry, I really didn't want to mention it.

I like Found. You can always extend it (Foundling, Found Cat, Found-at-work, ...) and you can alliteratively swear at it with a variety of curses when necessary. You can shorten the longer names into appropriate forms like Foundling > 'Ling > Dingaling, Little Ling and so on.

Found. Besides, it honours a good website.

Hmm....

[identity profile] aceofkittens.livejournal.com 2005-07-20 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
That's an interesting suggestion. :) We traditionally give all of our cats proper human names, though. So it will never pass the Committee. Alas! Not that Spoon or Scantron are human names, but they are more sibilant, and cats like that.

Really, once I have a huge list, what I should do is call them all out and see if the cat responds to anything.

[identity profile] pokiedot.livejournal.com 2005-07-20 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
yay new cat! yay!

[identity profile] aceofkittens.livejournal.com 2005-07-20 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm so happy! And I'm bringing him up to SF when I drive up for BM so my mom can cat-sit & everyone can meet him. Hopefully, by then he will weigh a lot more than 8.5 lbs! :)

[identity profile] valree.livejournal.com 2005-07-20 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I LOVE YOU, CATSO!

[identity profile] aceofkittens.livejournal.com 2005-07-21 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
Heee! :)

oo oo i got it

[identity profile] bettyscout.livejournal.com 2005-07-21 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
Dougal!!!!

Ah, go on! :)

[identity profile] aceofkittens.livejournal.com 2005-07-21 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
"Ahhhh, Sister Assumpta!" :)

[identity profile] 8ofswords.livejournal.com 2005-07-21 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
I think he's adorable!! He looks rakish. So maybe he's not a Jack, but could he be an Errol?? Or maybe a Flynn?

[identity profile] aceofkittens.livejournal.com 2005-07-21 07:33 am (UTC)(link)
He does have a sort of a nautical flair. Perhaps Horatio Hornblower... :)
ninjakitten: Ninjakitten! (boB)

Huzzah cat! :D

Hmmm. He looks like a Simon to me.

That's a great suggestion... thanks! :)

awwwwwwwwwwww... kitty!!!! :D

[identity profile] aceofkittens.livejournal.com 2005-07-21 07:36 am (UTC)(link)

I... love cats. :)

how sweet!

Re: awww...

[identity profile] aceofkittens.livejournal.com 2005-07-21 07:37 am (UTC)(link)
He's a sweetie! :)

[identity profile] saladbar.livejournal.com 2005-07-21 07:04 pm (UTC)(link)
He looks like a "Sly".

[identity profile] aceofkittens.livejournal.com 2005-07-21 07:30 pm (UTC)(link)
He's too sweet and good tempered to be sly... maybe once he's able to do more than lie limply on the floor, he'll turn out to be naughty, though. :)

[identity profile] spican.livejournal.com 2005-07-21 08:04 pm (UTC)(link)
*stumbles in here* I'm awake!

Ahhh, it's fated love! :)))) He's a beautiful boy! I can tell from the picture that he's good at purring and loving. What a sweet friend! *hugs AoK & kitten*

How about Julius for a cat appearing in July? Or for a Norwegian twist, I offer Askeladd. (Askeladd is the fairy-tales' happy-go-lucky boy in the cinders, a male Cinderella who wins the princess through his smarts, luck and good nature. Maybe there's even a Russian equivalent with a better name?) But a cat by any other name would be as sweet. :) I'm so happy for you and the kitty!

[identity profile] aceofkittens.livejournal.com 2005-07-21 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
He is a purr monster. :) He's so nice and sweet and mellow. It's sad how thin and weak he is, but I'll soon fix all that. *nod* :)

He's a cutie. An undernourished cutie right now, but a sweet thing nevertheless.

Just wait til he's all sleek and badass! :) I'm sure I'll get some action shots then! :)
