I posted this to the Kittypix community, and I thought I'd give it a shot here too.

Last month, I started volunteering with Give Me Shelter Cat Rescue, a nonprofit organization based in San Francisco which tries to save cats from "death row" at Animal Care & Control. Some of these kitties are up for adoption at a local Petsmart, and I've been going once a week to play with them, clean cages, etc. This is where and how I met Mister. He needs our help to find a home!

My first impression of Mister: here is a big, lanky, black & white cat stuck in a cage much too small for him. He was grooming himself, but then he looked up and saw me, and came to the front of the cage and made this small, pitiful little squeak, rubbing up against the bars. I let him out and he rolled around in front of me, boisterously rabbit-kicking when I played with him using one of those "oven mitt" toys. I figured this active sweetie would get adopted out fast. But now it's been nearly a month, and Mister is still there at Petsmart.

I read all the notes from Mister's stay at Animal Care & Control: volunteers describing how depressed he was; how he wasn't eating; how he was lying in his litterbox; how he would blossom and purr and want head scritches, and then would hiss and growl once back in the cage. It didn't say in the notes why Mister's owners had relinquished him to Animal Care & Control. I'm sure they justified it somehow. Maybe they thought he would get shunted over to SFSPCA and adopted quickly. Instead, he was deemed "unadoptable" and was headed for euthanasia until rescued by GMS.

Quite frankly, being in a cage is driving Mister insane and he has regressed horribly since I met him. Right now, he really is unadoptable. He is so frightened and angry and depressed. He has started flinching back when I open his cage to clean it, and he growls and tries to bite whenever anyone reaches toward him to scritch him. He lies down in his litter, whether it's clean or dirty. He has stopped grooming. He is breaking my heart.

Do you know anyone (or are you someone) who could give this wonderful lost boy a foster home or a forever home? Mister is going to take some work right now to come around and be a loving cat again. I think he was probably always a little bitey, and now he is terrified and doing his best to defend himself. He needs someone who will understand what he's been through and won't just dump him out because he's got some rough edges.

Here are two pics of beautiful Mister:

If you can help Mister, just let me know and I will talk to the gals at the rescue group. Thank you.
