Watch the eye! (Encore)

Gosh, it seems I was whining about eye trouble just yesterday, but it was actually more than two years ago. Time flies.
So it was about 6 p.m. on Sunday night, and I was wandering toward Mad Sal's to meet up with some friends who had come to visit Dickens Fair. I decided to get a (proper) cup of coffee first. My right eye had been bothering me a bit towards the end of the day, but I thought I was just getting tired. All of a sudden, I felt a sharp, stabbing pain and my eye began to water copiously. It looked like I was crying... so much so, that the coffee girl wanted to give me the coffee for free. Since the tears didn't stop, I went backstage and my poor eye was blood-red. It felt like I was smuggling a boulder under my eyelid. Long story short, I threw out my contact lens, got some saline from the First Aid guy and flushed the eye, then limped home early with the afflicted eye closed.
I've had both conjunctivitis and a scratched cornea and this definitely felt like the latter. I tried to find my antibiotic eye drops from the last bout of pinkeye, but couldn't. The eye really wasn't all that better today, unfortunately. It still felt sharply pained, I couldn't look at light without feeling acute distress, and the redness was still quite alarming. I decided not to tough it out and went to the nearest ophthalmologist who delighted me with the news that the reason it feels like I am being stabbed through the eye with a piece of glass is because some sort of staph bacteria are nomming on my cornea. They apparently climbed under my contact lens and set up shop. DISGUSTING! There is a name for this phenomenon that I forgot immediately.
Since the doctor herself didn't seem at all alarmed by any of this, I am choosing not to be alarmed either. She insisted it is not contagious and explained it's because of my "oily skin" and that this is probably why I have had similar eye issues in the past. She prescribed topical antibiotics and predicted I will see improvement by Wednesday. Naturally, in the manner of
toastmantom and his Burning Man bike accident, I am therefore less worried that I am going to lose an eye and more concerned that this is going to mess up my last two weekends of Dickens Fair, since my glasses are not 'period,' and I am banned from wearing my contacts.
Well, that is all for now! I can only look at my computer for about 10 minutes at a time, since the eye is still really light-sensitive.

When can you get Lasik? Or can you at all? I had problems like this with my contact lenses and Lasik happened not soon enough.
