"The Dog Star, Sirius, is tried -- and found guilty -- by his heavenly peers for a murder he didn'tcommit. His sentence: to live on the planet Earth in the form of a dog until such time as he can carry out a seemingly impossible mission -- the recovery of a deadly weapon known as the Zoi..."
I've only just heard about Diana Wynne Jones, because Miyazaki & Studio Ghibli's next film is going to be based on another book of hers, called Howl's Moving Castle - which, when I read the description of the book a few weeks ago, sounded just weird & interesting enough for me to go get it...
...sadly, it's out of print, so my hopes were quashed. I'll definitely have to look out for Dogsbody, though! It sounds right up my alley.
You could try amazon.co.uk. I believe that pretty much all of the Diane Wynne Jones books are in print again in the UK, as she's one of the authors who's benefitted from the increased interest in young adult fantasy as a result of the Harry Potter phenomenon.
Which is good, as getting hold of her books used to be like pulling teeth. :-)
"Howl's Moving Castle" also has a (somewhat loosely connected) sequel called "Castle In The Air". You might want to look for that one too.
...why the name Diana Wynne Jones sounded so familiar. I loved, loved, loved her book Archer's Goon, and powered through all the rest of her stuff in about 6th or 7th grade. Probably still have some of 'em at the parents' house.

Date: 2003-07-07 10:43 pm (UTC)Barnes&Nobles has new and relatively cheap paperback editions out dere, which I just found out.
Of course, I ended up finishing the novel before my flight, leaving me nothing to read on the way home. Ahem.
Tomorrow, I head to the bookstore to get Dogsbody....
